I was working on John’s knees this morning and I told him a story relating to his problem about a patient who had come into the clinic with knee pain that he had been suffering with for a number of years. He had gone to a number of doctors for treatment and all the tests that they had run on his knees were negative such as xrays, MRI, etc. yet they persisted on treating his knees unsuccessfully with medications, physical therapy, knee braces, etc. After listening to this patients medical history I asked him a simple question. Did any of the doctors ever check his low back? The patient looked at me quizically and said no.

Over the many years of treating patients I have often experienced an interesting neurological reaction in patients. It goes like this. How many of you have hand, shoulder, knee or foot pain? Immediately you think that your location of the pain is the problem. Yet quite often you and your doctor forget to check the actual origin of the condition. If you have shoulder, upper back, arm or hand pain make sure that your neck is checked for the origin of your problem.

If you have hip, leg, knee or foot symptoms check your lower back for the problem. Often the origin of your problem is not at the point of pain but at the nerve “root” of the problem

P.S. The xrays  taken by the patient in question showed an osteoarthritic along with a vertibral displacement of the lumbar (lower back segments)  that innervate the knees. We are presently treating the patient’s low back for his knee problem. We will keep you posted on his success.
